BRITISH TEXTILE MACHINERY AT ITMA ASIA 2005
-- Innovations underline Asian market appeal for UK firms
-- World-leading developments in testing and quality control
-- Full details of the exhibiting UK firms and their exhibits
BRITAIN’S textile machinery companies are ready to show
their innovative power at this year’s ITMA Asia exhibition
(October 17-21). At least a dozen completely new machines or
units will be launched by UK firms in Singapore, with end-uses
ranging from components for synthetic fibre manufacture to adhesive
laminating systems.
A clear emphasis on new and upgraded products underlines the
importance attached to ITMA Asia by these companies, whose participation
is organised and led by their representative body, the British
Textile Machinery Association (BTMA).
Says BTMA chairman Steve Combes: “Asia is, of course, the
dominant market region in most textile sectors, and our member
companies have worked hard to establish strong relationships
with manufacturers there. The quality of British products, combined
with innovations that focus directly on the specific needs of
the customer, is vitally important, as is the need for effective
local and regional sales and support networks.
“
We are expecting ITMA Asia to reflect the dynamism of the Asian
textile manufacturers, as well as their expertise in selecting
the correct level of equipment for their market conditions. BTMA
members are well-equipped to provide the right options, and we
are confident that Singapore will see a further upsurge in business
for UK firms.”
Testing and quality control is an area in which the UK now leads
the world, and at least seven of the British exhibitors in Singapore
will show their latest ranges. Some of these innovations demonstrate
new levels of sophistication in obtaining and applying quality-related
data, but a recurring theme among exhibitors here will be the
availability of testing ‘essentials’ – often
more basic machine types performing vital functions with a combination
of reliability and economy. For many Asian mills, such equipment
is spot on.
Alan Little, director of the BTMA, emphasises that the UK remains
a major source of textile manufacturing expertise, and this is
channelled into the product developments which are most relevant
to the needs of modern textile mills: “British companies
have focused their R&D efforts very clearly on a number of
specialised areas for which there is a readily-identifiable global
demand,” he says.
“
This has been reflected in increasing sales in important market
areas – and there is none more important than Asia, so
we are anticipating that our members showing in Singapore will
maintain this momentum and build on the impact made by British
companies at previous major events such as ITMA 2003, CITME and
ShanghaiTex.”
From its own stand at ITMA Asia, the BTMA will provide information
on its entire membership, totalling nearly 50 companies across
the entire spectrum of textile processes.
HIGHLIGHTS
For fibre and yarn producers, British innovations at ITMA Asia
will include a totally new range of online sensors for production
monitoring, from Dent Instrumentation. Effective performance
and an attractive purchase price are the twin attractions of
these units.
New jets for the fibre extrusion process, from Fibreguide, can
now accommodate 20 or more ends in one jet core. The FG10 range
can operate with a pitch as close as 4 mm.
Fibre weight control for preparatory stages in nonwovens and
woollens can now be managed and checked automatically, thanks
to the new Mill Wizard real-time monitoring system to be shown
by Garnett Controls.
For high-pile synthetic fur fabrics, James Holdsworth’s
novel card clothing ring will be featured, for use in sliver
knitting processes.
A new 2-metre wide laminating machine will be shown by UK firm
Web Processing. The PUR machine uses a reactive, moisture-cured
hot-melt laminating method.
Among a very wide range of testing and instrumentation being
launched at ITMA Asia will be the FlexiBurn flammability tester
from James H. Heal, which is claimed to be the first such device
with built-in radiator to meet official international test standards.
Objective grading of fabric quality parameters such as pilling,
Snagging, hairiness, creasing and wrinkling is achieved by two
new instruments from Roaches International: the Opti-Grade SET
and Opt-Rate SAS open the door to long-distance communication
and comparison of quality issues.
SDL Atlas will show no fewer than 25 instruments, including at
least three novelties: the MMT Moisture Management Tester; the
Rapid Conditioner, for bringing test specimens to the correct
temperature and humidity for testing; and the PillGrade automatic
grading system for pilling.

As the only official supplier of knitting needles and elements
to the world’s leading sock knitting machinery manufacturers,
Mitchell Grieve is able to offer proven quality to its Asian
customers.
Its speciality is in key components for both single- and double-cylinder
sock machines, complemented by the supply of needles and elements
for fully-fashioned machines and sinkers for large-diameter single-jersey
circular knitting equipment.
In Singapore, the company will highlight the fact that it also
supplies needles and elements to knitting mills direct – in
fact, these ‘after-market’ sales are growing fast,
and Mitchell Grieve believes its emphasis on customer service
and product quality gives it a competitive edge over the low-cost
local suppliers who target Asian knitters. “Locally-made
items may be cheaper, but we are certain the quality will not
match that of our products, made in our UK manufacturing facilities,” says
Mitchell Grieve’s Chris Cashmore. “Our quality standards
are confirmed by the fact that we supply all the leading sock
machine builders, while our largest direct sales to knitters
are in extremely demanding markets such as the USA and Turkey.
ITMA Asia visitors will see latest examples from the firm’s
ranges for all major hosiery and circular knitting processes,
including latch needles, bearded needles and associated elements.

Two new developments that use digital imaging to take the guesswork
out of fabric quality testing will be unveiled at ITMA Asia by
Roaches.
Both innovations – the Opti-Grade SET and Opt-Rate SAS – provide
objective grading of vital fabric quality parameters. Says Roaches
managing director Richard Golonko: “As more and more garments
and fabrics are sourced at long-distance, quality issues are
of paramount importance to retailers. To date assessment of tests
has relied on laboratory staff to provide a subjective assessment
of results, and this has at times caused disputes between the
supplier and the retailer.”
Now, the two Roaches testing innovations provide independent
and consistent results, which do not depend on the judgement
of the laboratory personnel.
The Opti-Grade SET, developed in conjunction with Marks and Spencer
and Shenkar College (Israel), performs three functions, using
a neural network to grade the test fabric:-
•
Grading of pilling tests – including the fuzz as well as
the pills.
•
Grading of Snagging.
•
Grading of fabric hairiness.
Opt-Rate SAS was designed as a result of co-operation with Cotton
Inc. and Texas Tech, and it grades fabrics for surface effects
such as creasing and wrinkles. The fabric is digitally scanned
and the image is then automatically converted to an objective
grade.
Results from both machines are displayed on a PC screen and can
be transmitted by e-mail as a pdf file.
Complementing these novelties in Singapore will be established
quality control instruments such as the Martindale APS abrasion
tester, which now has a multi-function touch screen and user
interface. Roaches will also feature its lab-scale dyeing and
finishing machinery, including the advanced Colortec package
dyeing machine with on line spectrophotometer option.

exhibiting the same staining performance. Sales and marketing
manager Lynne Ramsden comments: “Almost 3,000 individual
tests have been carried out to ensure the consistency of performance
of Multifibre SDC DW fabric. This insistence on strict quality
standards has paid dividends, for the test records prove that
SDC Multifibre DW Fabric continues to demonstrate an excellent
degree of consistent quality in colour fastness testing, giving
credence to the test results”
The test fabric, along with other SDC consumables for use in

A highlight in Singapore will be Web Processing’s 2 metre
wide laminating machine, to be exhibited on the firm’s
stand. The PUR (reactive moisture cured hot melt polyurethane
adhesive) machine will be shown in the execution which is most
popular with the majority of customers, and which Web states
has been “hugely successful” for the lamination of
a very wide range of materials for the lingerie, garment, automotive,
foul-weather workwear, military and security services, sportswear,
footwear, and various industrial applications.
The company has sold more than 40 of these machines in the past
three years, with several more orders in the pipeline, and it
attributes the PUR system’s success to its simplicity,
small size and comparatively low cost. The PUR laminator can
process roll to roll, roll to sheet, and sheet to sheet without
any physical removal or addition of equipment. The operator has
only to make two changes to the electrical drives.
As well as the PUR, Web Processing produces machines for conventional
coating, laminating, electrostatic flocking and specialist applications,
and has built a strong worldwide reputation for its high added-value,
low volume equipment for the textile, paper, film and foil industries.
Total machine sales over 36 years have reached more than 860,
with clients in 51 countries.
Web Processing has been active in Asian and Indian sub-continent
markets for many years, and anticipates that ITMA Asia will be “an
extremely successful venture.”
