NEW PRESIDENT FOR CEMATEX

Cematex, The European Committee of Textile Machinery Manufacturers based in Zurich , Switzerland , has appointed Mr Stephen R Combes as its new President at its recent General Assembly meeting held in Germany .

Mr Combes takes over the Presidency from Mr Albert Edward Roberts, who retires from the position after six years at the helm.

Mr Combes, a British national, spent 13 years as Managing Director of SDL Atlas Ltd, responsible for the company’s manufacturing and global distribution businesses based in the UK and USA .  He joined the original Shirley Developments as Finance Director in 1985, becoming Managing Director in 1995. Prior to joining SDL he held a number of financial and managerial roles in a variety of industries ranging from shipbuilding to retailing.

Mr Combes has also served as a member of the British Standards Institute Steering Committee on the Physical Testing of Textiles, as well as several ISO committees dealing with Pilling and Cotton Stickiness.  He was involved with the CTIC organisation in Beijing to create the first Fabrics China laboratory for the development of new Chinese Standards compatible with ISO, and has headed various government-sponsored R & D projects in UK and European universities/research associations which have resulted in a number of patents.

Mr Combes studied Mechanical Engineering at Sheffield University , UK , and is a Fellow of the Institute of Ch art ered Management Accountants .  He has been a director of the British Textile Machinery Association (BTMA) since 1999, and was elected as its Chairman in 2003.
